And though it isn't the fanciest, I am a big fan of this wire soap dish from Serafina. It offers the best "breathability" for handmade soap, thus extending its life.

I have a soap dish very much like the one pictured there and it's fab. The soaps really do last much longer if they're allowed to drain and dry.
I wish I could give out a soap dish like this with each purchase.
I know what you mean. I used to buy in little inexpensive wooden soap dishes to give to customers who bought more than one bar. I was horrified to later learn that the soap dish turned to mush after a month. They didn't like water.
Metal is definitely the way forward.
